Unique Sand Hill That Can Move

Great Dune of Pyla is located 60 km from Bordeaux in the Arcachon Bay area, France, known as the tallest sand dune in Europe.

Great Dune of Pyla is also known as the Great Dune of Pilat. The giant sand dunes has a width of 500 meters, a length of 3 km and height of 107 meters above sea level. The beauty of these destinations makes it a popular tourist destination with more than one million visitors per year.



Interestingly, it turns out the giant dunes never stop moving. Sometimes moving fast (10 meters per year) and sometimes very slow (less than one meter per year).

Over the last 57 years, the dunes have moved as far as 280 meters, which means an annual displacement of 4.9 meters per year.
